Is there any good Desktop Blogging software?

Posted on February 27, 2007. Filed under: Blogging |

I’ve been looking at desktop blogging software recently, trying to see if I could find something better than just using Wordpres and Moveable Type, so that I could blog quicker, and thus, get more posts done.

Problem is, I can’t really find anything that I think will do a better job than just using the web-based interfaces of these two blogging platforms.

I looked at MarsEdit for Mac, and it was kinda cool, but I had such a hard time finding where to edit the timestamp on a post that I just gave up.

I looked at iBlog for Mac as well, and I didn’t care much for the interface.

I haven’t looked at the Performancing plug-in for Firefox yet because, frankly, Firefox has been giving me grief on my Macs since version 2 came out. I’ve really stopped using it all that much, and have mostly switched over to Safari or Shiira.

If you’ve tried any desktop blogging software on OSX and have had success with it, please let me know, I’d love to try it out.

I hate cable…but only because it sucks.

Posted on February 22, 2007. Filed under: TV |

As I sit here fuming with rage over the fact that my cable DVR screwed up my recording of Lost tonight, I am given a little bit of peace knowing that the AppleTV is coming soon, and this won’t be a problem much longer.

I can’t wait to drop my cable television.

Poor channel choice…way to expensive…and DVRs that somehow manage to suck AND blow at the same time. Can the future please hurry up and get here?

I think with things like AppleTV, and software based solutions like Joost all coming out this year, 2007 is going to a big year for “not cable”. I’ve never been happy with paying for cable. When DVRs first came around, I was much more satisfied with the monthly bill, but now, with legal solutions like iTunes…I just don’t see a need for it.

I understand that sports fans still need to bow down before the might Time Warner/Comcast gods, but I’m a geek…such things do not matter to me.

I speculate that the AppleTV will ship next Tuesday. I expect to have it at my door by next Wed. or Thursday, and I expect to call the cable company and tell them to take this crap and shove it on Friday morning.

Ah…it’s going to be a great week.

Just got back from Ghost Rider…

Posted on February 17, 2007. Filed under: Comics, Movies |

Well…I just got back from Ghost Rider…and Dear Lord was it awful.

Here’s a small excerpt of the review I just posted on Forever Geek.com

Johnson’s superhero movies are like that girl down at the far end of the bar. When you look up and glance at her, she looks kinda cute…but the closer you get, the more obvious it becomes that she’s “almost pretty”. In fact, that’s how I would have to describe Ghost Rider…”almost pretty”.

The Awesomeness of Advanced Copies

Posted on February 17, 2007. Filed under: Blogging, Comics |

You know, I don’t know if I really felt like a “professional” blogger until I got a package today.

Waiting on me at my doorstep this afternoon was a box from Dark Horse Comics. One of my roles at Forever Geek has been to add additional coverage of comics and sci-fi, and I have been getting in contact with companies in regards to getting review material.

Inside my box was a collection of Star Wars comics that I will be putting under a microscope soon, but below them…deep under the packing peanuts was a folder (possibly the snazziest file folder I’ve ever seen) decked out with the Dark Horse logo.

I opened it to discover all 24 pages of the first issue of the new Buffy the Vampire Slayer comic coming soon from Dark Horse. These pages look like laser prints of the final artwork, and for some reason, as I held this loosely printed comic in my hands I felt like “I’d made it”.

Stupid? Probably, but I just couldn’t help it. You’ll see the review shortly on Forever Geek, but right now I’m off the take a look at Ghost Rider and see how I feel about that…

…do jobs get any better than this?

From 0 to Full Time Blogging in under 6 months!

Posted on February 14, 2007. Filed under: Blogging |

Well,  I debated about launching a personal blog for a while…I mean, who the heck woud want to read about my none Apple or Geek related  posting?

I have no idea.  I don’t know why you’re here, or why you would care about what is going on in my life…BUT…if you are interested in how I got started doing this, then here you go.

I actually didn’t get started blogging until September of last year.  I launched MyTechLists.com after being frustrated with not being able to get much traffic to the webcomic I was producing at the time.

I wanted to see if I could drive some serious traffic to my website, and I wanted to see if I could write stuff that communities like Digg, Slashdot and Reddit wanted to read.  So I figured…tech stuff for sure…and everyone loves lists…so lists too…BOOM – MyTechLists was born.

It wasn’t long after that before I had a story or two on the front page of Digg.  I was writing about Apple stuff, and making lists, and the diggers seemed into it.  That was really exciting.   I soon discovered that I really enjoyed blogging, and that I wanted to see if I could turn it into a full time job.

So I started responding to  ads posted primarily on Problogger.net and it wasn’t long before I had a few gigs.  The problem was, they kinda sucked.  Low pay, no guarantee that what I wrote was even going to be published…and on top of that I was like one in twenty bloggers on these pages.  I didn’t really care much for that.  It’s hard to give a blog a voice when there are twenty people writing it…but then I responded to an ad from the Bloggy Network…and everything changed.

They needed an Apple blogger, and most of my Dugg stories had been about Apple, so I responded to the ad.  I started working for them part time in October, working on  Apple Gazette.  The blog has been very well recieved by the Apple community, and the site has been featured on Slashdot, and Digg numerous times….all very exciting stuff.

Then, in January, I was offered a full time position with Bloggy, and since February 1st, I have been doing this blogging thing full time.  Taking on the duties of Forever Geek in addition to Apple Gazette – plus I’ll occationally post on Gadgetizer and Wii Living for Bloggy as well.

In addition to blogging, I’ve also started an Apple Gazette Weekly Podcast, and you can expect a Forever Geek podcast to start up soon.

It’s been a crazy year so far…and things just keep looking up!
